Marie Ryan Takes a Look at the Turnstile Revolution
If your idea of a turnstile is a badly painted metal
contraption that stood between you and a football match when you
were younger, think again. The reality is that the turnstile has
come of age. The reason for this is simple, the turnstile is still
the ideal way of restricting access and controlling the flow of
people through any given area.
Combine this simple concept with state-of-the-art technology and
you start to see why so many of Ireland's leading Financial Institutions
and Blue-Chip companies have been installing turnstiles to solve
their access control problems.
For many years now, companies have accepted the fact that to maintain
security and limit access, they must implement some form of access
control system. These systems have normally used code numbers or
swipe cards to allow access into a building or department. While
these traditional methods have been good up to a point, they have
one major flaw - 'tailgating'.
Tailgating is a term that is used to describe a method of gaining
access to an area by following an employee through a door after
he has used his card or code. In many cases, the employee has been
known to actually hold the door open for a perpetrator, believing
him to be another member of staff, a client or repairman. Even security
guards who inspect passes have been known to wave through ex-employees
whom management would have preferred remain off the premises, for
one reason or another.
The use of turnstiles completely eliminates the problem of tailgating,
as they only physically allow one person through at a time. The
other advantage is of course, not only will turnstiles stop people
getting in, they also stop them getting out.
Tailgating was a problem we identified some time ago, so we researched
the market to find the best equipment to combat it. This is when
we became sole agents for Gunnebo Mayor range of entrance control
systems. Gunnebo Mayor is the result of a merger of two of the leading
companies in the security industry and has over 100 years in collective
experience and expertise in entrance regulation and control.
